Day 12 - Waskally Wabbits, Dirt Nap & Oh My Aching Back

Hi all!

It's day 12 and our adventurous spirits are still alive and well despite the fact that 3/4 of our "Challenger RV" travelers (Sue, Steve, & Loki) have "health" issues.  Let me explain:

Waskally Wabbits - Loki

Dog heaven...........

It seems we have found Loki's very favourite activity in the world - chasing waskally wabbits.  At first I was concerned that Loki may catch a jack rabbit, perhaps hurt or give one of them a heart attack.  I am far less worried about Dumpy-bum Klio - she's definitely at least 8 paws behind Loki, the leader, at all times.  So, I googled information on jack rabbits and it turns out that they are (at least) twice as fast as a dog and there is literally no chance that the city-slicker hounds will beat them in a foot race.  They zip & zap, this way and that, with insane precision and agility.  Heart surgeons would be jealous of the jack-rabbits' talents.  Our dogs may spot the rabbits, but they dash out of harm's way pretty quickly.  Loki did get a wee injury desert bush injury, a tiny little scrape on his "knee" the other day, but seeing both dogs returning to us after each sprint, with tongues hanging to the ground and happy dog-smiles on their faces, we are now fine with letting them get the odd little owie in the process.  They're in doggie heaven right now - so fun!

Tired puppies.

Dirt Nap - Sue

We have been mountain biking most days out here in the Nevada desert and loving it.  Steve and I have discovered all kinds of muscles that we forgot we had!  It's been fun running the dogs in the dry brush, not knowing whether or not we're on public or private land (oops) while wondering what kinds of animals, plants and fellow explorers we'll find.  It seems that my balance could improve a bit though as I was tripped up by Klio when she took a 90 degree turn just ahead of my front bike tire.  I wasn't going very fast because I was trying to take pictures while riding my bike (chewing gum while walking.....same thing.....).  Steve cautioned/jinxed me to be careful on the sand while peddling my bike with a sprained & possibly fractured toe (stubbed the little guy last week) and trying to ride with a camera in hand when......whoop, I went down like a sack of potatoes.  Of course, my camera arm hit the ground first, right into a tumbleweed & the dirt.  The camera impacted the ground first too and wouldn't close, then wouldn't open later, because there was so much sand caught in the lens.  Tragic.  Luckily, though, Steve was able to clean it up again and get it working the following day.  Me - I ended up with a sore shoulder, scraped-up arm and bruised leg.  Hey Scotty, I'm finally a member of your club - "The Hard-core Mountain Biking, Road Rash Injured, Didn't Even Cry After Taking a Dirt Nap", biking club.  Wahoo!

Sue - before joining Scott's club........

Oh My Aching Back - Steve

It seems that bike riding every day, hot-tubbing every second day, and motorcycling around town hasn't exactly been "what the Dr. ordered" for Stephen.  His sciatic nerve has been giving him all kinds of pain for the past 2 days, to the point that he can barely sit or lay down.  He spent 3 hours, yes three hours, in the hot tub yesterday trying to soothe his back.  Poor boy.  Steve went to the physio therapist today and feels a bit better, but is on light duties for the next few days.  He's toughing it out though.  No dish washing, vacuuming, cooking dinner, making the bed, cleaning the trailer, etc. for him.  Hey wait a minute!  Ha!  I know what most of you are thinking: awwwww poor baby, living the life of Riley, traveling around with a wife/trailer maid, seeing the sights, relaxing in whirlpools, gambling in casinos and so on.....but, to dampen his spirits a bit further, the weather is supposed to turn for the worst tomorrow.  He's really going to want to get in the hot tub after seeing the forecast.

The mercury is dropping here in Reno and we'll see a high of 18 degrees tomorrow and a low of -2 degrees.  Wednesday we're looking at a high of 14 and low of -2.  That's right, we're putting the flip-flops away for a while.  Okay, Scotty, now I'll cry.

So, Klio is the healthy one in the trailer (go figure) and we are preparing for a bit of cold weather.  Still having fun here and missing all of you, there.  Hope you're all well & good.

Jessica, Stephanie and Heidi.....this is the closest we've been able to manage a photo of the wild horses yet (no they're not chickens) - but, we'll keep trying!

xoxoxo Sue
